Pirelli predicts one-stop strategy for Italian GP, Imola

Pirelli has confirmed their P Zero Yellow medium and C4 as P Zero Red soft compounds will compete in Italian Grand Prix at Imola this weekend, which compounds used in season opener Bahrain Grand Prix.

Pirelli Explains why they choose these tyres

Once more, the three middle compounds in Pirelli’s Formula 1 range – C2 as the P Zero White hard, C3 as P Zero Yellow medium, and C4 as P Zero Red soft – have been selected for round two at Imola in Italy: the same choice as for the Bahrain season-opener, which showcased a number of different strategies.

This was also the same choice as the last race to be held at Imola nearly six months ago, although the tyre structure has changed for this year to offer greater durability and allow the use of lower pressures for more resistance to overheating. Imola 2020 was also run with just one 90-minute practice session; this year there are three free practice sessions of one hour each.

The C2, C3 and C4 tyres have been chosen for their wide array of capabilities: well-matched to the varying characteristics of the Imola circuit and the ample range of possible weather conditions in spring, with the European season now getting underway much earlier than in recent years.

Imola is an old-school circuit that provides a big technical challenge with a mixed selection of different corners and speeds that test all aspects of a car’s performance. With just one F1 race held there since 2006, back in the temperate conditions of late autumn last year, teams do not have a huge amount of relevant data to fall back on.

The track is quite narrow in places, which adds to the challenge of overtaking and puts an emphasis on strategy. Last year’s strategy was influenced by a safety car late in the race (as well as an earlier virtual safety car) with Lewis Hamilton winning using all three compounds, having started on the medium. Without the safety car, a one-stop strategy would probably have been selected by the majority of drivers: also because the pit lane time loss is quite big at Imola, at roughly 25 seconds.

Although it was re-asphalted prior to last year’s grand prix, Imola – an anti-clockwise circuit – is still quite bumpy and there are some big kerbs, placing notable demands on the cars and drivers.

There are no support races planned for the Imola weekend apart from Formula Regional by Alpine, which represents the first step on the ladder to international single-seater racing, just below Formula 3. This will affect track evolution for F1, with not a lot of rubber being laid on the surface. Formula Regional is supplied exclusively by Pirelli, with two sets of slick and wet tyres available in a single specification and two races per weekend. Imola is the debut round for this all-new series.

“After an exciting start in Bahrain, we have exactly the same tyre nomination for Imola: a circuit with very different characteristics, which we are excited to be visiting as title sponsors, helping to demonstrate the prestige of ‘Made in Italy’ to the world. Although the last race at Imola took place nearly six months ago, conditions could possibly be different now in April compared to November, and of course the tyre construction has changed. As was the case for the last race here, we expect teams to go with a one-stop strategy, also because of the time lost in the pits and relative difficulty in overtaking. The safety car made a big difference last year, so there are a lot of question marks heading into this weekend’s return to Europe.”

Mercedes has been weird since Silverstone – Red Bull

Red Bull Racing ace Max Verstappen leads the 2021 F1 world championship ahead of seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton. But in the constructor’s championship Mercedes leads ahead of nearest rival Red Bull Racing. Mercedes decided some time ago to stop the development of this 2021 F1 car. The Silver-arrows now focus on 2022, when the regulation widely change.

But Mercedes have been doubted with the rival Red Bull asking a curious development in their F1 championship battle. In the first-half this season Red Bull shows the consistent pace, but recent some races Mercedes heavily improves their performance.

Red Bull F1 team advisor Helmut Marko claims that Mercedes have made great improvements by continuing to boost their speed. He also admitted the team put “more downforce on the rear wing” than Red Bull, but believes something has been “weird” with Toto Wolff’s men since British Grand Prix.

Marko told F1-Insider.com: “I don’t think Mercedes did anything illegal.

“But something has been weird since Silverstone. So, it is now up to us to research why they are suddenly so fast. Is it just the engine or something else?

“We now have to workday and night to uncover its secret and then counter it. As quickly as possible. It is up to us.”

“If the differences in performance remain the same as in Istanbul, we will have a problem.

“Of the six racetracks, only the courses in Mexico and Sao Paulo play a part in our cards because of their altitude. At the moment the rest clearly seems to be Mercedes-Land.”

2021 F1 title is set to go to the wire – Toto Wolff

“I don’t think you can say that with absolute conviction,” Wolff said. “I believe we have a really good package now.

“The car is competitive and was very competitive [in Turkey] and if it wasn’t for a grid penalty I think we would have had every chance to finish first and second.

“That would have meant eight points more but I’m looking carefully optimistic into the future.”

“Austin [for the United States Grand Prix] is a track we like and is another opportunity but I’m under no illusion this is very much going to go to the end in the drivers’ championship.”

Slicks was obviously the wrong decision – Vettel

Sebastian Vettel was the only driver tried to slick compound-race in the damp Istanbul Park circuit for Turkish Grand Prix. Following switch to medium compound the Aston Martin ace had zero grip and too much slower than any other driver.

Following the slick’s huge disadvantage four-time world champion returned to the pits, partial-spinning in the pit entry and then swapping back to the inters. After the incident the German has been takes all responsibility regarding the slick call.

“Together, but in the end I made the decision, I wanted to try it. There was nothing left of the intermediates, I thought the slicks could perform just as well, but I couldn’t run them in and just had no grip. I lost so much time…”, Vettel said to The Race.

“It was worse than I expected. Even if it was a little bit still here and there, or wet – like I said, the main thing is that I couldn’t run the tyre in and then you’re just sliding.”

“But at the time, I don’t know, I was already tempted for a few laps, the inters didn’t get any better. If you looked at the tires, there wasn’t much left of them. They looked like a slick. I think I had reason, but it was obviously the wrong decision”.

“On the inters there was nothing left, I thought the drys could be as good, but I couldn’t run them in and just had no grip, lost so much time, couldn’t make them work. It was worse than I expected”, the German concluded.
