F1 confirms 3 sprint qualifying races for 2021, How F1 Sprint Quali works

Formula 1 governing body FIA confirms that, three Sprint qualifying will be held at three Grand Prix races in 2021. Venue has still not revealed but are said to take place this season at two European venues and one non-European venue.

The goal of the new format is to “increase the on-track action and engage fans in new and innovative way,” according to the FIA.

On the Friday there will be a qualifying session after the First Free Practice that will determine the grid for the Sprint Qualifying on Saturday. The results of Saturday’s Sprint Qualifying will determine the grid for Sunday’s race. It has been decided that the top three finishers in Saturday’s Sprint Qualifying will receive points, with first place receiving three points, second place two points and third place one point.

Friday:

60-minute First Practice in the morning with two sets of tyres for teams to choose freely. Normal Qualifying format in the afternoon with five soft tyre sets available only.

Saturday:

60-minute Second Free Practice in the morning with one set of tyres for teams to choose freely. 100km Sprint Qualifying in the afternoon with two sets of tyres for teams to choose freely.

Sunday:

Full distance Grand Prix with two remaining sets of tyres

In the event of wet conditions:

Three sets of Wet and four sets of Intermediate tyres at the start of the event If FP1 or Qualifying is wet, teams to receive an additional set of Intermediates but must return a used Intermediate set prior to Sprint Qualifying. If the Sprint Qualifying wet, teams may return 1 set of used Wet or Intermediates after – to be replaced with a new set of Intermediates.

Maximum of 9 sets of Wets and Intermediates in total

Parc fermé conditions:

Parc Fermé conditions will apply from the start of Qualifying on Friday, forbidding the changing of major components with three objectives:

To stop the construction of special Qualifying cars.

To limit the number of hours required for preparing the car for the following day. To allow enough reconfiguration of the cars to make Saturday morning Free Practice a useful session.

After the start of Sprint Qualifying, cars will be in full Parc Fermé. A limited number of components will be able to be changed after Qualifying:

Weight distribution may be altered.

Power Unit and gearbox cooling may be adjusted by altering the engine cover outlets or louvres providing the declared ambient temperatures recorded by the FIA appointed weather service provider one hour before the start of Qualifying and one hour before the start of Sprint Qualifying varies by 10 degrees Centigrade or more.

It was made possible thanks to the continued collaboration between the FIA, Formula 1, and all of the teams. F1 is showing itself to be stronger than ever with all stakeholders working together in this way, and much has been done to ensure that the Sporting, Technical and Financial aspects of the format are fair.”

Red Bull Racing ace Max Verstappen leads the 2021 F1 world championship ahead of seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton. But in the constructor’s championship Mercedes leads ahead of nearest rival Red Bull Racing. Mercedes decided some time ago to stop the development of this 2021 F1 car. The Silver-arrows now focus on 2022, when the regulation widely change.

But Mercedes have been doubted with the rival Red Bull asking a curious development in their F1 championship battle. In the first-half this season Red Bull shows the consistent pace, but recent some races Mercedes heavily improves their performance.

Red Bull F1 team advisor Helmut Marko claims that Mercedes have made great improvements by continuing to boost their speed. He also admitted the team put “more downforce on the rear wing” than Red Bull, but believes something has been “weird” with Toto Wolff’s men since British Grand Prix.

Marko told F1-Insider.com: “I don’t think Mercedes did anything illegal.

“But something has been weird since Silverstone. So, it is now up to us to research why they are suddenly so fast. Is it just the engine or something else?

“We now have to workday and night to uncover its secret and then counter it. As quickly as possible. It is up to us.”

“If the differences in performance remain the same as in Istanbul, we will have a problem.

“Of the six racetracks, only the courses in Mexico and Sao Paulo play a part in our cards because of their altitude. At the moment the rest clearly seems to be Mercedes-Land.”

2021 F1 title is set to go to the wire – Toto Wolff

“I don’t think you can say that with absolute conviction,” Wolff said. “I believe we have a really good package now.

“The car is competitive and was very competitive [in Turkey] and if it wasn’t for a grid penalty I think we would have had every chance to finish first and second.

“That would have meant eight points more but I’m looking carefully optimistic into the future.”

“Austin [for the United States Grand Prix] is a track we like and is another opportunity but I’m under no illusion this is very much going to go to the end in the drivers’ championship.”

Slicks was obviously the wrong decision – Vettel

Sebastian Vettel was the only driver tried to slick compound-race in the damp Istanbul Park circuit for Turkish Grand Prix. Following switch to medium compound the Aston Martin ace had zero grip and too much slower than any other driver.

Following the slick’s huge disadvantage four-time world champion returned to the pits, partial-spinning in the pit entry and then swapping back to the inters. After the incident the German has been takes all responsibility regarding the slick call.

“Together, but in the end I made the decision, I wanted to try it. There was nothing left of the intermediates, I thought the slicks could perform just as well, but I couldn’t run them in and just had no grip. I lost so much time…”, Vettel said to The Race.

“It was worse than I expected. Even if it was a little bit still here and there, or wet – like I said, the main thing is that I couldn’t run the tyre in and then you’re just sliding.”

“But at the time, I don’t know, I was already tempted for a few laps, the inters didn’t get any better. If you looked at the tires, there wasn’t much left of them. They looked like a slick. I think I had reason, but it was obviously the wrong decision”.

“On the inters there was nothing left, I thought the drys could be as good, but I couldn’t run them in and just had no grip, lost so much time, couldn’t make them work. It was worse than I expected”, the German concluded.
