Verstappen’s thankful for Hamilton's respect

2021 Formula One world champion Max Verstappen and his father Jos Verstappen describes how defeat Lewis Hamilton and his father Anthony Hamilton congratulated them after the dramatic Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Dutch young man Max secures his first F1 title in the final in the final lap battle. F1 race director Michael Masi’s strange decision made most dramatic world title climaxes in Formula One history.

Following incident, Anthony was seen sharing a handshake with Verstappen and a hug with his father Jos after a dramatic Yas Mariana title decider.

“The whole team were going crazy, but of course you have the other side where they are very disappointed and upset,” said the world champion during an interview for his sponsor CarNext hosted by David Coulthard.

“I think what was nice, of course, Lewis immediately came to me [and said] ‘well done, congrats’ and I said ‘thank you very much for an amazing season’ because at the end of the day I think it was an amazing season, whether we won or came second.

“We did push each other every single race to the limit, with ourselves but also the car and the whole team.

“I think everyone is very happy that the season is over, to have a bit of a break because it has been very tense and very tough on everyone. But it was definitely a great rivalry.”

Jos Verstappen praised the respectful behaviour of Anthony.

“When I was sitting with Max before he went up to the podium, Anthony was there and he congratulated us. That was really nice,” said Jos.

“Also, during the season I had some conversations with him over WhatsApp. He’s really nice.

“They won seven titles already, so for them it’s a bit different, I think, [to] when we win the first one. But he’s always respectful.”

Hamilton was deflated. Silent. Spent time with his dad, who held his son’s head in his hands.

Seven-time F1 world champion said: “Firstly, a big congratulations to Max and to his team. I think we did an amazing job this year, with my team.

“We gave it everything this last part of the season, we gave it absolutely everything and we never gave up. And that’s the most important thing.

“I’ve been feeling good… great in the car this past couple of months, particularly at the end.

“If I’m honest, you know, we’re still in the pandemic and I just really wish everyone to stay safe and have a good Christmas with all their families and then we’ll see about next year.”

The Official confirmation by FIA said that a “minor” breaking of the budget cap. As resulted exceeding the budget by less than 5% or $7.25m – could have big consequences if the FIA decide to punish them.

Max Verstappen, who won a second F1 championship in weird conditions in Japan on Sunday, clinched the 2021 F1 title after late and controversial drama involving the safety car in Abu Dhabi.

The cost cap breaches penalty ranges from a public reprimand to a financial penalty or secondary level sporting penalties.

• Public reprimand
• Deduction of Constructors’ Championship points awarded for the Championship that took place within the Reporting Period of the breach;
• Deduction of Drivers’ Championship points awarded for the Championship that took place within the Reporting Period of the breach;
• Suspension from one or more stages of a Competition or Competitions, excluding for the avoidance of doubt the race itself;
• Limitations on ability to conduct aerodynamic or other Testing; and/or
• Reduction of the Cost Cap

Red Bull hint they will appeal FIA decision

The statement, released on their social meadi page read: “We note the findings with surprise and disappointment. Our 2021 submission was below the cost cap limit so we need to carefully review the FIA’s findings as our belief remains that the relevant costs are under the 2021 cost cap amount.

“Despite the conjecture and positioning of others, there is of course a process under the regulations with the FIA which we will respectfully follow while we consider all the options available to us.”
