Double time F1 world champion Max Verstappen has hinted that he might retire from the Formula 1 at the end of Red Bullās contract, which will expire in 2028.
The Dutch youngster secured his second world title at the end of chaotic Japanese Grand Prix on last Sunday. It would be the first time since the Sebastian Vettel era in 2013 that Red Bull won the team title, breaking Mercedes’ dominant eight-year streak.
When the news source asked, how long he could continue to dominate, Verstappen said: āIt can be a long time but, in the end, I donāt see myself driving until I am 40 because I also want to do other stuff.
“Iām having a lot of fun with what Iām doing right now and Iām still in F1 for a couple more years. Iām signed until ā28.
āAfter that, it depends on how everything is going. I will probably try to do a few different racing things as well because itās important to try different things.ā
At Suzuka, asked regarding immediate plans to celebrate his second world title success, he added: “Iām flying home.
“I already planned that for whatever would happen at the weekend.
“Itās important to sometimes rest a bit but once I get home, for sure, you can relax a little bit but at the same time, look forward to the remaining races.”
As quoted by the Daily Mail in May, Verstappen said: āIām not planning on changing teams. Iām happy here and they are happy with me. But I havenāt made up my mind what I will do after 2028. I might stop.
āI have been in Formula 1 since I was 17. Itās been a long time. Iāve done a lot of seasons in F1.
Maxās father Jos Verstappen also indicates he will retire after Red Bull contract.
“I think Max is not only incredibly good, but he also knows what he’s doing,” Jos Verstappen, told the Dutch magazine Formule 1.
“We will take stock again in 2028,” he said. “It’s not like he’s chasing records.”
The former F1 driver Jose also agrees that Max might now be set for a Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, or Sebastian Vettel style series of F1 titles in a streak.
“It depends on how good the car is,” Jos, his father, explains.
“If Max has a competitive car, he will compete for the world title every time. Because the strength of the driver will then be decisive. Then we are set.”
